My Transgender Secret vs Tinder for trans dating

The app that calls itself the world's most popular, or a site made for trans dating.

Tinder calls itself "the world's most popular dating app", and it has offered more gender options since 2016. My Transgender Secret is smaller and made for one thing: meeting trans women, crossdressers and the people who admire them. If you want reach, Tinder; if you want trans dating to be the whole point, us.

What Tinder does well

Size is Tinder's great strength. It describes itself as the world's most popular dating app, so a trans woman on Tinder can be seen by a far bigger crowd than on a site like ours. It added more gender options in November 2016, and today you pick Man, Woman or Beyond binary, with more choices in some markets, and decide whether your gender shows on your profile. It has photo verification by video selfie, ID checks in selected markets, and a web version as well as the apps.

For a trans person who is out, confident and happy to be seen by the mainstream, that reach can be worth a lot.

The catch with a crowd that big

A mainstream crowd is not built around trans dating. In 2019 Tinder itself said trans members were "unfairly reported by potential matches more often" than cisgender members, and its community guidelines bar hate based on gender identity.

For admirers there is a quieter snag. Tinder's help pages list its Discovery settings as sexual orientation, age and distance, and describe no way to search for trans women, so saying what you are looking for on a mainstream app can feel like a risk.

What My Transgender Secret does differently

Here, trans dating is the whole point. You can join as CD/TRANS, as more than 1,800 members have, and most members are men. Profiles carry interests made for the community, such as transwoman, full time, en femme, stealth, TS-friendly and transfan, so you can tell before you message whether you want the same things.

It is also built for discretion. You go by a username, your real name and email are never shown, your location shows only your nearest town, and VIP billing does not show the site name on your statement. It runs in your browser, and you can pin it to your home screen so it opens like an app. There is a free ID check (blue tick), and you can also verify with a live video check with a moderator. See everything members get and how we keep members safe.

When Tinder may suit you better

If you are a trans person who wants the widest possible pool and can shrug off the odd awkward match, Tinder is hard to beat. If you are dating within the LGBTQ+ world more broadly, apps such as Taimi or Grindr may fit. You can always use Tinder and a trans dating site side by side.
